Design Intent
The King Campus is nestled within the Oak Ridges Moraine, a site of rich cultural and natural heritage. Our design is animated and inspired by the history of the native setting and cultural heritage of the campus. The landscape concept embraced this natural setting, and developed a design that transitions from pioneering native species to upland forest. This created an opportunity for learning and curiosity for students.
The King Campus is nestled within the Oak Ridges Moraine, a site of rich cultural and natural heritage. The scope included the addition of a new student centre, including: a new library, gym, learning centre, and gathering space. Our design is animated and inspired by the history of the native setting and cultural heritage of the campus. The landscape concept embraced this natural setting, and developed a design that transitions from pioneering native species to upland forest. This created an opportunity for learning and curiosity for students.
The design creates public spaces of varying scales that encourage a diversity of both programmed and casual uses. These spaces are linked by a network of internal streets, interconnected atrium’s, designated activity zones and the spaces between. These diverse elements encourage students to engage and interact in both structured and spontaneous activities.
The design positions public spaces on the building perimeter in carefully considered relationships to the adjacent landscape design. This design solution created numerous opportunities to enhance connections between exterior and interior communal zones, and welcomes in the unique features of the King Campus setting.
