Design Intent
NAK lead the design of Carrington, a 155 hectare development in North West Calgary, with a focus on creating distinct, character rich neighbourhoods within a vibrant and innovative community. Its layout was designed to be responsive and expressive, allowing the land to inform the design direction, leading to the creation of unique development opportunities, open space experiences, and multi-modal systems. All of these elements, combined with a logical road and transportation system, strategic mix of uses and densities, and neighbourhood scale parks and open spaces, will create a unique community to live, work, and play.NAK’s role has progressed from visioning, land use planning, and urban design, to detailed landscape design and tendering.
The Carrington Skate Spot is designed as an anchor to the new community and conceived as a skateable urban plaza with rollers, skateable rails, the volcano and a range of quarter pipes for an easy transition and flow throughout the park.
Overall, the skate park is approximately 6,000 sq feet and is framed by a 66 ton custom metal canopy that spans most of the airspace above the canopy. NAK managed the design, construction and integration of the skate park within the community.
