DESIGN INTENT
The landscape concept has been to create a memorable “place making” space for users and residents of 234 Simcoe Street. The space has been thoughtfully designed using abstract forms to draw users into its animated retail promenade. The pedestrian passageways have been sewn into the city’s fabric creating natural links to the surrounding urban network. Large drought tolerant shade trees as well as rhythmic boulevard trees brighten the space, tying into the surrounding urban ecosystem.
The Urban Garden takes strong linear cues from the dominant landscape elements neighboring the site. Linear pathways lead the users to secluded seating alcove, which are embraced by colourful indigenous flowers. The garden’s lawn has been designed to form playful berms, creating unique seating and play areas for the site’s users. The garden’s design creates unique and dynamic form, emulating the artistic theme of the surrounding neighbourhood and community.
A generous pathway intentionally divides the Urban Garden, guiding users with its abstract paving pattern to the central promenade. The paving pattern and landscape elements have been designed to create gateways, and lead users to its lively retail promenade. The promenade is a highly contemporary public space, with an architecturally designed canopy, modern outdoor furnishings and retail spaces. The space is intended to be a vibrant space creating an private urban oasis.
