Design Intent
The Conservancy is a distinctive new master planned community – located north of the Jock River. Just south of the future community, on the banks of the Jock River, is an expansive area of land envisioned to serve the open space needs of the community and beyond, exemplifying sustainable practices and environmental stewardship, given its proximity to the River. NAK was tasked with developing the Jock River Open Space Vision for this area, to help illustrate the potential active and passive opportunities within this destination. A major goal was to create as an identifiable and unique river’s edge experience, one that would allow visitors to experience the diversity and wealth associated with the Jock River, while being interwoven within the greater open space system.
The lands under observation are associated with the greater Jock River floodplain. They are important ecological areas, that provide value both naturally and culturally. Key drivers in the design of this open space was the acknowledgement of its ecological sensitivity, and the inclusion of sustainable design practices to help mitigate adverse impacts on the surrounding environment. The design includes an array of trails, lookouts, programmed and unprogrammed greenspaces, along with areas focused solely on conservation and naturalization. By allowing residents and visitors to have appropriate access to the proposed natural and programmed amenities, they will be provided with opportunities to both enjoy the natural benefits associated with this environment, while being immersed in the educational opportunities of the various environmental stewardship measures taking place.
Located just east of the site is the Barrhaven Town Centre, the suburb’s future downtown. The Jock River Open Space is intended to act as part of a larger open space system, with thoughtful connections to surrounding communities, as well as the downtown core. The intent is that this open space system will create compatible synergies with the downtown, drawing residents and visitors and showcasing the breadth of natural and cultural features that this newer community of Barrhaven has to offer. With amenities and open spaces designed to cater to persons of all ages, abilities and preferences, this open space vision aims to create spaces that encourage the community of Barrhaven to develop healthier rhythms, create open spaces for neighbours to connect, and provide a natural oasis steps from the community.
